The fountain at Forsythe Park in Savannah

Who Has The Best Manners?

Southerners have the best manners. My husband and I discovered that for ourselves during our twelve-day trip to Savannah and the Golden Isles of Georgia. Everyone was polite– from little kids, to teens, to adults. It was like nothing we ever see in California.

A little boy held the door open for us; a small girl waved from her Daddy’s arms; a teen boy interrupted his conversation with a girl to say, “Hi y’all,” . . . nearly every person we passed would say hello, smile, or nod. Of course, in busier Savannah, people didn’t stop what they were doing to say hello, but if there were only a few people about they did!

And here’s the other wonderful thing, unlike in California or the West Coast in general, I never heard anyone say the f-word. I’m not kidding! The closest we got to that was the transplant from Berkeley,  who used his middle finger to illustrate a story.

Now why are Southerners so polite? I’ve heard they are raised that way, it’s a deep part of their culture – southern charm – and I’m guessing they don’t swear in public because many of them are religious. I may be wrong, but whatever the reason, it’s nice. West Coast people could learn a thing or two from their fellow citizens down south.

So this is my introduction to readers about our travels in Georgia. Please stay tuned for many more blogs about the area, because we had a fantastic time, and I want to share it all with you.

I’m looking forward to reading more about your adventures in Georgia. I, too, have had the pleasure of enjoying Southern hospitality/manners. Did you happen to notice that people in the South tend to speak more slowly than those in Boston? That really took a while for me to get used to. On the other hand, this Yankee took to saying y’all quick as a wink. 😉

I love the phrase “y’all!” It’s so much better than West coast “you guys.” 😂
Thank you for letting me know that you enjoyed the blog. I will write many more about Georgia as soon as I get the time. And until then, there are some that I wrote a few years ago about our visit to Savannah and Charleston. Thanks for your interest!
